TiVo Announces KidZone

TiVo today announced a new feature that will come to many TiVo DVRs this summer: KidZone. This is a feature with the ability to restrict shows that kids can watch. Parents will be able to specifically approve shows for kids, and that’s all that will be available to them. In addition, the TiVo will be able to help parents decide which shows might be appropriate based on ratings.

As with pretty much all new TiVo features at this point, KidZone will only be available to TiVo Series 2 DVRs – those that don’t have the DirecTV service integrated into them. TiVo says this feature will be available “mid 2006.”

TiVo Desktop for Mac

TiVo has updated the version of TiVo Desktop for Macintosh to 1.9.2. This version finally promises compatibility with Tiger (OS X 10.4). Previously, you had to use a separate utility to get TiVo Desktop to work on Tiger, but now it installs and works without a problem. The notes claim it won’t work with an Intel-based Mac yet.

Still no TiVoToGo, but this clearly means that attention is being paid to the Mac platform, so hopefully that’ll be out soon.

TiVo DVRs in Canada

Most of you probably know that TiVo now supports use in Canada. We have a bit more information.

First, WeaKnees now ships to Canada. We offer two methods of shipment: USPS (which uses Canada Post on the North side of the border) and United Parcel Service (UPS). UPS costs a bit more, but our results have shown that deliveries happen much more quickly and that the website offers frequent tracking updates. The USPS/Canada Post method essentially offers little or no tracking and seems to be significantly slower than UPS.

Next, make sure that your unit has TiVo OS 7.2 or later on it. Those OS versions support Canada in a much more elegant fashion than earlier versions. If you have an earlier OS version, you’ll need to see this information for Canadian TiVo users.

As of now, all standalone WeaKnees TiVos shipping to Canada will have TiVo OS 7.2 or later – wherever you buy one, be sure to get this OS as it’ll make life much easier.

Finally, we are unable to ship DirecTV equipment to Canada at this point. But everything else on our site is shipping to Canada now, and ready-to-go!
