In stock and shipping today at $89.99, the new TiVo Slide Remote contains a full QWERTY keyboard. This means you can enter long search terms faster and more easily. We’ve been asking for this for a while and we’re excited that it’s here!

The remote is like a shorter, fatter version of the standard TiVo peanut. It’s even shorter than the original Series1 remotes – yet it contains all of the buttons of the newest remotes – and, of course, more.

Slide open the top like a cell phone to reveal the full keyboard, and type away!

More great features of the TiVo Slide Remote:

Backlit, like the TiVo Glo remotes

Learning, so it can work with many more TVs and receivers

Uses BlueTooth – no line of sight needed!

The TiVo Slide remote works with any TiVo Series3 or TiVo Series4 DVR including the TiVo HD and TiVo Premiere lines. This remote will NOT work with Series2 or earlier DVRs, or with DirecTV TiVos.

Order a TiVo Slide Remote today!

TiVo has been touting the Wireless N adapter for their DVRs, and it’s now available. We’ll be shipping ours starting 4/30/10. You can preorder one here:

TiVo Networking Parts

TiVo Wireless N Adapter

This adapter is fundamentally different from the TiVo Wireless G adapter (which will continue to be sold). Besides the extra speed (and extra $30 in cost), this unit acts more as an ethernet-wireless bridge. So it plugs into the ethernet port, rather than a USB port.

Using the ethernet port is different for a few reasons, but presumably TiVo designed the adapter this way to be able to get more throughput than they could over USB. But it also means the unit needs its own power outlet. Additionally, this change limits the compatible units for this device to any unit that has an ethernet port on-board – so the dual tuner TiVo (units with service numbers starting in 649) or any HD TiVo for cable (original Series3, TiVo HD and HD XL, and TiVo Premiere, and Premiere XL).

If you don’t currently have WiFi, or if you want N WiFi for your TiVo and you currently have a slower variety (B or G), you can get two of these units and configure them in bridge mode. This allows you to put one adapter on your TiVo and one directly on an unused ethernet port on your router and create an N wireless link.

Final note: this adapter will step down to B or G speeds if that’s the fastest protocol supported in your router.

As mentioned in an earlier post, we’ve been working hard on getting the new TiVo Premiere HD upgraded in a rock-solid configuration, and, after much more testing, we’re happy to say it’s a complete success! We even have a new maximum capacity available: 4 Terabytes – that’s enough storage for up to 640 hours of HD recording.

These units are now in stock and ready for sale – you can find them on our website here:

TiVo Premiere HD DVR – Stock and Upgraded

We’re able to upgrade both the TiVo Premiere and the TiVo Premiere XL to the same capacities, thanks to lots of new code inside these units. So you can get a 2 TB internal drive in either one, or you can get either with a 2 TB internal and a 2 TB external if you want it.

Here’s a screenshot from our new largest TiVo ever:

And, of course, we’ll have upgrade kits on the site and shipping soon also!

About 640 HD Hours on one TiVo!

Whatever the case, if you’re reading this, you’re likely enough of a TiVo fan to know that the TiVo Premiere started shipping a little over a week ago. However, due to some changes in the way and location that data is stored on the Premiere, upgrading the box was not the same as earlier models.

Just as with the TiVoHD and TiVoHD XL, new tools had to be developed. Fortunately, we have some very talented folks behind the scenes (and a hearty, warm and huge thank you goes out to the one largely responsible!), and once again, we have an upgrade solution up and running.

We haven’t put the kits up on the site quite yet because we want to do some additional testing, but the 4TB kit consists of a 2TB inside the TiVo and a 2TB external. We expect to have 2TB internal kits available for both the Premiere and the XL, and likely will have a 1TB and 1.5TB kit to replace the 320gb in a Premiere.

And, of course, we’ll have a variety of complete units for sale soon, topping out with a 4 TB TiVo Premiere XL.

Keep watching the blog for more info. You can also subscribe to our email list to be notified when these units are ready to go!

In addition, starting 3/26, we will be shipping the new TiVo Premiere XL Glo Remote.

This remote is similar to the Series3 Glo Remote, but has no DVR1/2 switch (used to control two DVRs independently using the same remote), but does have A, B, C & D color-coded buttons used in the new high-def TiVo Premiere user-interface.

The new Series4 Glo Remote IS backward compatible to all TiVos that use a peanut-shaped remote, but from what understand, the A, B, C & D buttons will have no functionality in the older-model TiVo DVRs.

In light of the announcement of the TiVo Premiere, we thought this would be a good time to recap the various service plans available at TiVo!

At WeaKnees, we really recommend the lifetime service option (PLS, or Product Lifetime Service) for your TiVo DVR. At $399 for your first unit (and less for additional units – see below) this pays for itself in 31 months versus the monthly plan option at $12.95.

TiVo Service Plans

Compared to the Annual service plan, the Product Lifetime plan pays for itself in just over three years. You just have to come up with the $399 up front. But if you’re considering Lifetime, make sure you don’t pay for any monthly service first; that money would just be wasted.

Another benefit of Lifetime Service is that, since it’s tied to that box, it’s transferable. So if you decide, down the road, to upgrade to a newer TiVo, you can sell the old one with the lifetime attached. In many cases, that’s what makes the upgrade to a new box financially viable.

Next, for existing customers with TiVo DVRs, or for customers activating more than one DVR, the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth DVR on one account qualify for discounted service – called MSD or Multi Service Discount.

So instead of the pricing as above, these second-through-sixth TiVo DVRs (on the same account, at the same address) qualify for $100 off Product Lifetime Service and other discounted options:

TiVo Multi-Service Discount (MSD)

We make the same argument here that lifetime service is worthwhile, for the same reasons. Again, the lifetime option pays for itself in about 30 months, versus the monthly option.

So how do you activate your new TiVo DVR? Click over to TiVo! and choose the “Activate a TiVo box” link on the very bottom left of the homepage.

There’s no question we get asked here at WeaKnees more than “When is the new DirecTV TiVo HD coming out?”

There’s no question we get asked here at WeaKnees more than “When is the new DirecTV TiVo HD coming out?”

Man, do we wish we had a good answer.

Both DirecTV and TiVo have generally only gotten as specific as “2010.” And that’s all we’ve been able to repeat to everyone.

But, recently, DirecTV has posted a couple of tweets that narrow down the 12 month window to, maybe, a four month window. They’ve used the terms “early next year” and “first part of 2010″ in their posts.

Yes, this is important breaking news, and it’s definitive.

Now, if only we had some clue as to features, pricing, looks, availability, etc. . .
